Japanese Government Scholarships (MEXT) for 2026

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants, in principle, must be undergraduates at foreign (non-Japanese) universities at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.
  • Candidates must be proficient in Japanese in order to be admitted to a Japanese university in Japan.
  • By the end of the last month of the scholarship period, applicants must ensure that they return home in order to continue studying Japanese language and culture in the undergraduate program of the university they registered at when they arrived in Japan.
  • Candidates must submit an application, academic credentials from their present university, and certification that they have studied Japanese for at least a year.
  • Additionally, applicants should provide a university recommendation, a certificate of enrollment, and a Placement Preference Application Form.
