Citizens of certain developing nations who have supported their governments’ development efforts in the past and have appropriate professional expertise are eligible to apply to the JJ/WBGSP for master’s programs in development-related fields. JJ/WBGSP provides scholarships for 52 Participating Master’s Programs at 27 institutions in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan in important development fields such as infrastructure management, tax policy, and economic policy management, subject to funding availability.

Eligibility for The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP):

  • Applicants must be nationals of one of the developing nations on this list that the World Bank has identified; they cannot hold dual citizenship with any developed nation.
  • The candidate needs to be in good health.
  • The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, obtained no less than three years before the application deadline.
  • When submitting the scholarship application, the applicant must be working a full-time, paid job related to development. possess a bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) and have worked in a paid development-related capacity for at least three years after the application deadline, or within the last six years.
  • Candidates must be accepted unconditionally (without regard to funding) into at least one of the master’s programs involved in the JJ/WBGSP, which are situated outside of the applicant’s nation of citizenship and place of residence as listed at the time the call for scholarship applications opens, for the upcoming academic year on or before the deadline for scholarship applications. Before the scholarship application can be submitted, the admission letter needs to be uploaded.
  • No candidate may hold an executive director position, hold an alternate position, work for the World Bank Group, or be related to any of the aforementioned individuals by blood or adoption. “Close relative” refers to a parent, sister, brother, half-sister, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew.
  • Reapplication is not permitted for those who have previously been given a JJ/WBGSP scholarship but turned it down or who have previously been awarded a scholarship but did not complete their education.


Application Process:

The applicant has to fill out an online application form to apply for this scholarship and submit two letters of recommendation to complete the application.

Value/Benefits of the Scholarship:

  • Economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the start of your study program and immediately following the end of the scholarship period. In addition to the two-way air travel, scholars will receive a US $600 travel allowance for each trip;
  • Tuition for your graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance obtained through the university.
  • While on campus during the scholarship period, a monthly subsistence allowance to cover all living expenses (accommodations, food, etc., including books). The amount of the allowance varies depending on the host country.
  • Please note all JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.
